Signing of the Magna Charta Universitatum 2020 in London
During a ceremonial event held on 13 November 2025 in the chapel of King’s College London, the Rector of Pomeranian University in Słupsk, professor Zbigniew Osadowski, formally signed the Magna Charta Universitatum 2020.
The document confirms the fulfillment of high standards of academic freedom, social responsibility, inclusivity, and global cooperation between universities. More than 1,000 institutions from around the world already belong to the MCU2020 community, with as many as 68 rectors adding their signatures during Thursday’s ceremony.
The Magna Charta Universitatum 2020 is an updated version of the fundamental declaration of academic values originally adopted in 1988 in Bologna. The document emphasizes the autonomy of higher education institutions and their responsibility toward a changing world. Joining the MCU2020 signing process was made possible after an external assessment of compliance with the standards specified in the document and upon recommendation by three other higher education institutions that were already part of the Magna Charta Universitatum. The signing of the document concluded the three-day proceedings of the jubilee Magna Charta Universitatum Conference titled: “What role do universities play? Principles, values, and the responsibility of higher education in a divided world.”
The ceremony was chaired by the Rector of King’s College London, professor Shitij Kapur; the Chair of the Magna Charta Observatory and Rector of the University of Bologna, professor Giovanni Molari; and professor Patrick Deane, Chair of the Governing Council of the Magna Charta Observatory and Rector of Queen’s University.
